Client’s Need

Newer supercars have ever more power and torque, which are becoming more and more difficult to manage by non-professional drivers. Electronic controls can enhance a car’s performance and safety at the grip limit (that is, at the edge between controlled side slip and uncontrolled spin out) by leveraging the knowledge of the side slip angle (SSA). Physical measurement of the side slip angle had either low accuracy or require heavy and voluminous instruments, which are unsuitable for implementation on production cars.
Aim: provide on-board SSA measurement.

Approach

Virtualise the lab-scale physical sensors to provide accurate, reliable and real-time SSA estimate on board.

Main Outcomes

  • Modelway DVS® solution exploits available ECU data with minimal computational footprint. No additional sensors are required. The solution can be easily recalibrated for other vehicles.
  • Our solution was the first to accurately estimate the SSA with variable road conditions, both dry and wet, and the first to be integrated in series vehicles.
