Client’s Need
Tunnel boring equipment and consolidation works need to be adjusted to the characteristics of subsurface material to ensure safety and efficiency. An incorrect prediction of the geotechnical characteristics of the next tunnel section can lead to significant delays and additional costs. Improving the prediction of rock characteristics helps optimise worksite logistics and coordination.
Approach
Our NOSEM-based solution exploits tunnel deformation data collected before lining operations to suggest the most adequate tunnel lining structure and to estimate rock consistency in the next 20 to 50 meters, allowing to update reinforcement equipment and to schedule boring timing. This means a remarkable cost saving for worksite load and TBM management.
Main Outcomes
- We used a minimal dataset of real tunnel deformations to analyse the predictability of future deformations before the installation of reinforcing structures. Results have been promising but highlight the need to integrate more data regarding the advancements of the works.
