Client’s Need

The optimal sizing of the engine cooling subsystem is crucial in sports cars to allow maximum freedom for body designers while ensuring maximum engine performance.

Approach

The development of an algorithm that predicts the temperature of the engine coolant allows its thermal inertia to be managed, preventing it from approaching the phase transition point. This ensures that the available power can be exploited in all road conditions and driving styles.

Main Outcomes

  • Predicting temperature changes based on inputs already available on board, such as engine RPM and cooling water temperature, allows activations to be triggered tens of seconds before the coolant reaches critical temperatures.
