Client’s Need

Integration on renewable energy sources on the factory and storage system to store excess energy production by peak shaving policy, better management of energy flow to supply high variable loads, CO2 minimization, energy loss minimization and hardware component degradation. The total power to be managed was around 1 MW.

Approach

Development of a smart energy management system, capable to manage in best way each power module (genset, grid, fuel cell, Li-ion battery, photovoltaic and wind turbine) to supply variable factory load and store the excess energy produced. The solution exploits advanced control strategies (MPC) that in real time manage optimally the power modules and integrated AI models to predict on variable time horizon the load consumption and the renewable energy availability. The solution was firstly developed in a simulation environment to calibrate virtually the strategies and after implemented on RT target that interact with the field plant.

Main Outcomes

  • Energy loss reduction and CO2 emission reduction (with related estimation)
  • Shared HMI able to monitor energy flows, prediction of load and renewable implemented on cloud
  • Ensuring continuity of energy supplier
  • EMS implementation on the edge and flexibly adaptable to plant variation
  • Solution Cyber Compliant to main current legislation
